Where did you grow up?
I grew up here in Chicago, on the West Side.
What brought you to StreetWise?
I came to StreetWise four years ago. I didn’t have a job and StreetWise has been good. I feel like I can easily get a job, but I really like the flexibility of being my own boss here.
Where do you sell StreetWise?
Right now I am at the Macy’s at Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue.
Have you been at that spot all four years?
Actually, my assigned spot is the Nike store a couple blocks south. I am kind of a floater. I sometimes go all the way to Oak and Rush Street to the river.
How do people find you?
They look for the bear!
Do you have any strategies to sell the magazine?
Smile and be nice!
I think the bear probably helps too, huh?
Is there anything about Streeterville that the average Chicagoan may not know?
Most of the people on Michigan Avenue are tourists. The bulk are from Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa. Then there are people from all over the world. When people stop to say hello, I ask them where they are from, and I get an array of answers. When some people are from Italy or the UK, I tell them that StreetWise is a lot like The Big Issue (a European street paper).
What do you like most about Chicago?
Everything. Summertime, Navy pier, North Michigan Avenue, State Street, Air and Water Show. Summertime activities period. Summertime is something to look forward to.
Is there anything that you have learned while working at StreetWise?
I always hope that I respond to the good people, as well as the jerks. There are a lot more good people then there are jerks. I had to learn to respond to the good as well as the bad.
Are there any challenges you faced that you had to overcome?
The biggest challenge that I face selling StreetWise is that no one carries cash anymore. Product knowledge is one of the first things I learned when I had my first sales job. So when the magazine comes out, I read the magazine front to back, so I know my product.
What are your future goals?
I would like to sell cars. StreetWise has spoiled me, because I don’t want to work for anybody anymore! So I would like to buy and sell cars and have my own business.
What do you do for fun?
I am a family man, I have five kids, and four grandsons. I spend time with them. Family is more important to me than anything.
Is there anything else you would like to tell readers?
Be enthusiastic and polite. Good Karma, what you put out is going to come back to you.
