My husband Carlos and I dined at Luella’s Southern Kitchen, located at 4609 N. Lincoln Ave. in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. I picked this restaurant because I was born and raised near Damen and Irving Park in North Center and still come to Lincoln Square to see movies at the Davis Theater; Luella’s is across the street. Plus, we do not see many Southern restaurants in the neighborhood.

We went out on a Saturday night. The restaurant has a quiet, dimly lit, friendly atmosphere. I am in a wheelchair and the staff was very accommodating with seating arrangements. When we dine out we always try each other’s orders because we are foodies. I ordered the Chicken Gumbo ($7). Carlos ordered the Bourbon Chicken Waffles ($12) and a side of Buttermilk Biscuits with Sorghum Drizzle ($5) and we each got a can of soda with our meals.

Carlos’ meal was a great portion size and the waffles were very flavorful. The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and very well-seasoned. The bourbon syrup smelled lovely and the bourbon taste made the dish without being overwhelming.

The Chicken Gumbo was presented with a bowl of white rice and the waiter poured the soup over the rice in the bowl. Great personal touch. The soup was mildly spicy due to the spicy slices of sausage in it. I love spicy yet it was not too spicy. It was very filling. I used some of my biscuits to absorb the delicious broth.

Carlos fell in love with the biscuits and mentioned them being some of the best he has ever had — which says a lot since he is a huge biscuits and gravy fan. They were nicely moist and tasted very fresh.

I love supporting friendly neighborhood restaurants and it being so close to the theater we will definitely be back. This is a casual independent restaurant that is BYOB.
