With the NBA season coming to an end, fans and experts discuss awards. The SportsWise team got together to discuss who they believe should win the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Rookie of the Year (ROY) awards.
Sam: For MVP I bet I am stealing everyones nomination hear by picking Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors. He and that team have done amazing things. They clearly have had a banner year this season. I also think the team is just going to be a bit shy from reaching 70 wins this season so I think Stephen Curry has been the catalyst for the team. I believe he deserves some recognition. Some nights you see him leading the team in scoring, and other nights in assists. I just think he is such a great all-around player; he is so exciting to watch.
John: I would have to disagree with the MVP candidate but as far as the rookie of the year award I am going with Nerlens Noel from the Philadelphia 76ers. He is averaging 10 points per game (ppg), 8 rebounds per game (rpg), and 2 blocks. Now Andrew Wiggins from the Minnesota Timberwolves has been the favorite but he has dropped off a bit in his production lately. He has a higher turnover ratio to assist. He has not done a lot to make the Timberwolves any better. As far as Nikola Mirotic is concerned he hasn’t played enough. Now the NBA MVP, Steph Curry I like his game but he has Klay Thompson so hes part of a Batman and Robin duo. James Harden even though I don’t agree with the Beard he’s been playing well but not to the extent where these two other guys have carried their teams. My two picks were Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis but Westbrook edging out Davis because Oklahoma City appear to be making it to the playoffs. Westbrook is averaging 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists per game all without the help of Serge Ibaka and last years MVP, Kevin Durant.
Russell: For the (ROY) I have Noel in third, Andrew Wiggins in second, and my pick for (ROY) is Nikola Mirotic from the Bulls. He makes a difference and from all of the candidates that I mentioned (Mirotic) is the only one that stands out. He makes the team better, I mean Wiggins, his team is not going anywhere and Philadelphia. The Bulls have a chance of going somewhere and Mirotic is right there helping out. Now MVP, here is my order: fourth is Westbrook, third LeBron James, second Steph Curry, and the MVP is the beard Mr. James Harden. He is the MVP because when Dwight Howard went down for about 30 games in which he averaged about 20ppg and 10rpg. The Rockets are still the third seed in the Western Conference and you know why, because James Harden. He is carrying the team ladies and gentlemen and he is doing it all by himself and that is why he gets my vote.
John: I have to tell you something, I picked Anthony Davis from the Pelicans over Harden because he averaged 25ppg, 10 rpg and 2 blocks per game. New Orleans has nobody and that is the point because if they didn’t have Davis the team would be the worst team in the NBA.
Russell: Yes but where is that team? Pelicans are in the 9th seed which isn’t going to get you in the playoffs. Without Dwight Howard everybody said the (Rockets) had no chance so we should forget them but what happened? Rockets are right there in the 3rd seed.
Vince: I agree with you Russell because that was my pick James Harden. The reason why was because there was no real drop off when Dwight Howard went out. This man (Howard) is a superstar center but when he went down James Harden stepped up to a wholenother level. We knew Harden was going to be a star and superstar but he stepped his game up. He filled in the void with scoring, dishing out assists, and rebounding. With Howard out Harden became more of a team player and therefore that eliminated the hole and loss of Howard. Westbrook has done a lot to maintain his team but barely getting in the playoffs. Harden kept the Rockets at a top level by keeping them close to the top 4 seeds. That is why I believe and give the edge to James Harden. As far as (ROY) I am a Chicago homer guy so, I have to pick another beard who is Nikola Mirotic. I was going to pick Wiggins and I don’t know much about Noel but I am picking Niko Suave. When Jimmy Butler, Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson went down the Bulls struggled but there was one player who was able to step his game up and that was Niko Suave. If he maintains and becomes that 6th man by coming off the bench and becomes a key scorer I believe he can become the rookie of the year.
