Mission: Chicago Shares is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide a means for individuals, agencies, communities, corporations, and retail merchants to collaborate in helping hungry people who may be homeless. Chicago Shares administers a food voucher program that provides a way for citizens and visitors to help those in need safely and conveniently.
Annual Budget: $48,000
Key Campaigns: Staffed entirely by volunteers who help with sales, redemption and program administration services, Chicago Shares are sold through churches, synagogues, and on line. Purchasers then distribute the Shares to those in need asking for a hand-out. Cooperating Merchants redeem the vouchers for food and are reimbursed fully for each Share, valued at $1, at the end of each month. At the end of each year, funds remaining from non-redeemed Shares are donated to organizations with similar missions. In 2014, Chicago Shares distributed $5,500 of excess funds among three organizations: Common Pantry, Chicago Lights, and The Chicago Help Initiative. Initiated in 1993, Chicago Shares is currently seeking to increase its base of participating merchants to enable a wider range of options for Chicago’s urban poor.
Upcoming Events: Chicago Shares are regularly sold at area churches and online. Visit www.chicagoshares.org for participants and to order.
