Mission: Established in 1980, Access Living is a change agent committed to fostering an inclusive society that enables Chicagoans with disabilities to live fully-engaged and self-directed lives. Nationally recognized as a leading force in the disability advocacy community, Access Living challenges stereotypes, protects civil rights and champions social reform. Access Living focuses on programs and services that increase physical and programmatic access to education, transportation, housing, employment and health care opportunities that enable people with disabilities to pursue independent and satisfying life styles.

Annual Budget: $5,200,000

Key Campaigns:

  • Equal Access Across Chicago — Working with Chicago aldermen, we coordinate opportunities for affordable, accessible, integrated housing.
  • Home and Community Ombudsman Program — We assist individuals with disabilities who reside in their home and the community to address matters related to issues with their health care providers and plans, home services programs, benefits and rights.
  • Community Reintegration Program — We continue to move people with disabilities out of nursing homes and into their own apartments to live independently in the community.
  • Upcoming Events: The Access Living Annual Gala — June 1, 2015, at the Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier. The yearly fundraiser builds support for Access Living Programs. With the “Lead On!” Awards, we honor individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to the independence of people with disabilities.
