How did you meet Gregg?
I met Gregg the day I filmed the video, actually! I wanted to do a video story on StreetWise and so I started asking around to friends who might know of a location where I might find someone who sells the magazine. One friend of mine who lives in Lincoln Square mentioned a very friendly guy who stands in front of Potbelly’s. She guessed that he would be willing to talk to me. I just drove over there and introduced myself! Gregg was great – very open and thoughtful and just an inspiring person to meet. I was happy to tell his story.
Why did you do this video?
I’m a graduate student at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, getting my masters’ in broadcast journalism. For one of my classes, we have to produce a video package each week. So this story was a school assignment, but (as you know) I put it up on my public news blog, Datelines & Deadlines, as well (www.aubreypringle.wordpress.com).
Why did you want to feature Gregg – and StreetWise – in particular?
In college I spent a few years serving breakfast at a homeless shelter in Boston, and from then on I became pretty invested in that population (homeless and at-risk of homelessness) because I saw firsthand how hard it is for a lot of people to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. It’s nearly impossible without a little help. StreetWise, I think, provides the perfect amount of help – just enough for people to take control of their own lives.
What do you hope viewers can gain from watching your video?
I hope it will raise awareness about your great organization! I hope people will buy a magazine. I hope people will just be nicer and refrain from judging the homeless population.
How did you find out about StreetWise?
There is a wonderful woman who sells StreetWise in the mornings on Adams Street. I had talked to her a few times before I decided to do the story, just because I was curious about the organization. She explained it to me, I bought a magazine, and I really enjoyed the content. I thought the whole concept was so cool.
What is your opinion of StreetWise?
I think StreetWise is a great concept. And judging by people like Gregg, it seems that the organization is really making a difference. As a journalist myself and someone who cares about social justice, I think the magazine is a really amazing example of using journalism for good – not only to raise awareness about social justice issues in Chicago, but to make a tangible difference by providing a livelihood for a demographic that often gets ignored.
