Halsted St. served 615 guests (and nearly 60 children) at its November 10 event for people who are homeless, far exceeding its goal of over 500 attendees. Medical screenings were provided by Heartland Health Care; dental screenings by Tzu Chi Foundation; pediatric services by Dr. Scholl; legal advice by Metropolitan Family Services Legal Aid Society.
Bob Gorski and his Warm Wishes Foundation donated sleeping bags; Congressman Mike Quigley joined at this station for the first half of the event. Holy Family Church provided coats, as did students at St. Benedict Preparatory School. If coats were not available in a guest’s size, there were vouchers from Salvation Army. Haymarket screened for HIV and HCV hepatitis.
There was liaison with the Jesse Brown VA Hospital and haircuts/manicures by the Cannella School of Hair Design. Also, the North Lawndale Employment Network offered information on its U-Turn program for people who had been incarcerated.
