Our own ingenuity is future’s best resource

Wed, Dec 12, 2012

This is the first of many articles I hopefully I will have the pleasure to do within this magazine. I am Jacque Fresco, 96 years of age. My life’s journey has taken me from horsedrawn fire engines to the possibilities of manipulating molecules to produce whatever materials are needed. Living through the 1929 Great Depression helped shape my social conscience. During this time, I realized the Earth was still the same place, manufacturing plants were still intact, and resources were still there, but people didn’t have money to buy the products. I felt then, as I do now, that the rules of the game we play by were dangerously outmoded and damaging. This began a life-long quest resulting in the conclusions and designs presented by The Venus Project (www.thevenusproject.com).

Looking at the challenges facing society now, you can safely conclude it is urgent that we reexamined our values, and evaluated some of the processes and assumptions underlying our culture and society. Such an analysis would question the very nature of what it means to be human, what it means to be a member of a “civilization,” and what choices we have that would ensure a prosperous future for all people.
At present there are few alternatives. Yesterday’s answers are no longer relevant. Either we continue as we have with outmoded social designs, customs, and habits of thought–in which case our future is threatened–or we apply a set of values more relevant to a changing society.

Experience tells us that human behavior can be modified either constructively or destructively. This is what The Venus Project is all about: directing technology and resources positively for the maximum benefit of people and the planet. It seeks out new ways of thinking and living that emphasize and celebrate the vast potential of the human spirit.

We now have the tools at hand to design and build a future worthy of our human potential. We envision a bold new direction for humanity that entails nothing less than the total and conscious redesign of our culture. It is not based on wishes, ideals, or any particular philosophy, but rather on the humane use of science and technology, applied to how we live, so as to benefit all the world’s people while protecting the environment.

I will be sharing with you not a prediction of what will be done–only what could be done. The responsibility for the future is in our hands, and depends on the decisions we make today. The greatest resource available is our own ingenuity.
