StreetWise bids farewell to staff member & friend
What have you enjoyed most about working with StreetWise?
The best part of my week, every week, was getting to interview a new vendor for the vendor profile. Listening to their stories, becoming their friends, and witnessing the hope and determination with which they lived their life. I will miss knowing where they are at on their respective journeys.
Are there any words of advice that you would like to offer your replacement?
Only send something to print that you’re absolutely proud of. And if you ever are in doubt if your ideas will translate to the public, get vendor input… they have to sell the product, and have experience for what works and what doesn’t.
What will your new job be like?
My new job will be to serve as a construction superintendent for the company my father, Bob Cook, built in the Wichita, Kansas area. I will be managing remodel work, new home construction, coordinating sub-contractors and who knows what else, but I’m excited to get my hands dirty.
What would you like to say to the staff of StreetWise?
Thanks for showing me what it means to live the mission of StreetWise. Even though there were some shaky times for the organization financially, and quite a few changes in the product itself in my time at StreetWise, I always had confidence in the men and women I worked with. Also, thanks for welcoming me into your work, and making my 4 years in Chicago so meaningful.
What would you like to say to the vendors of StreetWise?
Thanks for the 225+ vendor profiles, and trusting me to interpret their stories accurately. Also, thanks for sharing their stories, poetry, illustrations, and for giving me the feedback I needed to create a better product for them to sell. I wish them all the best, and I’ll miss getting to check in with them every day.
StreetWise is very excited to introduce Brittany Langmeyer as the new Marketing & Productions Manager for the magazine, taking over in Ben’s stead. She is a 2011 graduate from Loyola University Chicago with majors in journalism and theatre and minors in political science and dance.
Brittany’s interest in StreetWise began last summer when she became an intern. During her time with the magazine, she was able to work closely with StreetWise editor, Suzanne Hanney, and hone her skills as a writer. While at Loyola, Brittany has been trained in broadcast journalism, design and layout, writing for the web, digital media campaigns, and more.
Brittany also hopes to pursue an acting career in conjunction with her position at StreetWise. Her forte is musical theater and has most recently been seen on the Loyola mainstage in “Little Women” as Marmee.
Brittany said, “I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing organization that not only allows me to pursue my love for journalism, but to also make a difference and help these amazing people. Thank you, StreetWise, and I promise to make you proud.”
