Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Chicago, around Cabrini Green. I don’t live in that neighborhood anymore, but I still visit all of the time.
What brought you to StreetWise?
A neighbor told me about it, he told me that he made good money doing it, and all he had to do was be nice to people. I figured I try to be nice all the time, so I thought I would blend right in. I was checking out Inspiration Café, and I noticed StreetWise was in the same building, so I checked it out.
How long have you been at StreetWise?
It’s been about five weeks.
Where do you sell StreetWise?
I am at the Starbucks by Merchandise Mart.
What is your strategy for selling the magazine?
I try to keep my customers very happy. I like to talk to them, I get to know them, they get to know me. I am not anti-social.
Please tell me something about that neighborhood that you wouldn’t know if you were not a vendor.
I think that people in that neighborhood are very respectful and very polite. I love when they smile, and I smile right back! It’s mostly business people over there.
What do you like most about Chicago?
I like the weather, and I like the sports. The Blackhawks! Go Blackhawks!
Have you learned anything from selling StreetWise?
I learned a lot. I learned how to talk to people.
Please tell me about a challenge you have faced and how you overcame it.
I played basketball, and I hurt my ankle, but I was still able to score. I knew my team really counted on me, and I had to be there for them. I used to play for Loyola in 2000. I wanted to take psychology, but I was bad at it. Then I took up art, while I played sports.
What are your future goals?
My future goal is to own my own business. I want to get the people that want to work a job, working for me. Then we will all be happy! I’d like a restaurant, a fast food/soul food place. I used to be a cook at the Fish Keg at Howard & Damen. I only left there because I moved to Michigan for 6 years for my son.
What do you like to do for fun?
I like to play basketball, I can’t wait for the summer! I like to shoot pool too, last pocket eight-ball.
Is there anything else you want your readers to know?
I want to thank everyone that is supporting StreetWise. It’s very hard to get a job now-a-days. I glad to be a part of StreetWise so that I can pay my bills and support my son. If it wasn’t for your help, I wouldn’t be anything.
