I understand you recently moved your vending location…
Yes, I was at 53rd and Harper. I’m now at 1430 W. Taylor and it’s great. The people at Starbucks are very good to me and they’re hanging with me. They look out for me and send customers to me and I have a great time over there. I’ve been there for about four months. I like the spot I have now and my clientele is picking up pretty well. And my customers have been coming through for me. They have been supporting me and I’m very appreciative.
You seem like you have a lot of fun with StreetWise.
I do, I really do. I have a whole lot of fun. And StreetWise has been so nice to me. I mean, problems come up and they have boosted me back up. I’ve been with StreetWise for about three and a half years now.
You’re such a positive person. What keeps you so positive?
People really boost me. They boost me up. They come in and talk to me and I ask them how they’re doing and how their families are. And they are very supportive towards me. There’s actually one guy, he comes around and runs a shipping business, and he gives me jobs sometimes after I get through selling my magazines, so I help him out a little bit. He says, ‘I know you got a family and I see you out here really trying, so I’ll give you a little extra work.”
Are you working towards any career goals?
Retirement. I’m hoping to really get through selling magazines and everything, because I’m 57 and I’m getting tired. So I’m hoping to be through selling at about 62 or 63 years old. It depends on how my body feels. Then it will be time for me to sit down.
How is your son, Micah, doing?
Micah is 6 years old now. He’s getting A’s and B’s. He got a C and I said, ‘Get out of that TV and do your homework. Read the book and do whatever you have to do.’ I want him on his P’s and Q’s. He likes playing baseball and soccer. And he can’t decide if he wants to be a lawyer or a doctor or a teacher. But we’re going to try and support him and, if he keeps up his A’s and B’s, he can get a scholarship to do what he wants to do.
What do you like to do for fun?
In my spare time, I like to be with my family – my wife, Yolanda, my youngest son Micah, and I [also have step-kids and older children, as well].
Do you have any goals for 2013?
I pray to the Lord that he makes things better for everyone, including myself. Lastly, I’d like to say ‘hello’ to the people in Hyde Park. And like I said, StreetWise has been great to me and my customers at StreetWise have also been good to me, so thank you.
