From the Streets: Women’s shelter mural to show progress in Little Village

Tue, Jun 12, 2012

A new mural project entitled, Progress Happens Here, is in the works to benefit the Families in Crisis Program at the San Jose Obrero Mission in the Little Village community. Artist Anne Farley Gaines will decorate the north side of the women’s shelter at 2408 S. Albany St. with the help of the program’s mothers and children. Progress Happens Here will complement the mural on the SJOM men’s shelter that was highlighted in the March 21 issue of StreetWise. The mural project has applied for a $4,000 Neighborhood Arts Program Grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, but still needs an additional $5,000 for labor and materials. “We feel that the mural is necessary to highlight the community,” said Israel Vargas, Executive Director at the SJOM. “We see Little Village as somewhat of a desert and the mural will bring spirit and color that is much needed here. It will belong to the community, to everybody.”

Donations to the project can be made at the mission’s website, www.sjom.org , and click on “Make a Donation.” Supporters will be invited to the mural unveiling ceremony upon completion.
