Quincy Hunter: building brick by brick

Wed, May 16, 2012

StreetWise Vendor Quincy Hunter can be described as a very laid-back, fun-loving type of guy. But when he gets to business, Quincy is extremely driven and working hard to build his life back up brick by brick.

“I came back to Chicago from Indiana and I was homeless. I was at the shelter – Father Jim’s home on Harrison and California. And they had an ad on the board, a flyer, saying that the StreetWise organizaiton was willing to help a lot of homeless people, people that were locked up such as myself, and trying to get back into society. So I went down and checked it out and I’ve been here ever since,” Quincy said.

Before he was incarcerated in 1999, Quincy had sold insurance for 10 years. After he was released in 2000 and first came to StreetWise, it took him awhile to warm up to the ways of the organization. “When I started at StreetWise, I looked at it the wrong way. I didn’t take the opportunity serious enough. But eventually I began to see, ‘Hey, I can do something with this.’ You be out there on the bricks long enough, you’ll wake up one way or another. I finally realized I ain’t getting no younger, so why not try to make the best of it at StreetWise. At least it’s honest. When I started realizing how honest it was… and then I started realizing that every time I turned around, if I needed to pay a bill or just pay rent for a room, I could do that through StreetWise. I could get the job done,” Quincy said.

Quincy is also taking advantage of other services that StreetWise offers. “I went to the banking class StreetWise had last week and I learned how to budget. They taught me a lot of things I had not really thought about and I saw that I have been neglecting a lot and complaining. But if I follow the format they showed me, maybe things can get done. It opened my eyes to see that I need to buckle down and tighten up the screws a little bit and do some more planning. I opened a bank account through the class and I didn’t have one before,” Quincy said. He is also taking a computer class through StreetWise and learning how to job search.

In his spare time, Quincy enjoys being with his fiancée, Helen. “I’ve been with [Helen] through all of this for the last 12 years. We’ve been engaged for the last 2 years, but we just haven’t been able to set a date because I’ve got to find a place for us first. She might want to take a chance with StreetWise, too,” Quincy said. For fun, the couple enjoys going bowling and watching sports, such as Bears and Bulls games.

When asked what keeps him focused and motivated, Quincy explained, “My faith helps me every day. The Lord is my motivator.” And he continues to look for his next employment opportunity. “StreetWise has given me self-containment, employment and security. I hope to find another job. I’m open to any and all jobs. I don’t think I’d be where I am today if it wasn’t for StreetWise. I prayed on it and prayed on it and God has finally let me see,” Quincy said.
