Chicago Cares builds a stronger community through volunteerism. It works closely with community leaders and partners to address the needs of Chicago Public Schools, create projects to address those needs, and mobilize volunteer groups to complete those projects.
“Our mission is to respond to the critical human service, educational and environmental needs of Chicago by creating, managing and leading effective and innovative volunteer service programs that foster the ethic of volunteerism, promote a sense of community and support our partnerships with community organizations.
Choose from more than 215 volunteer projects each month, all expertly planned by our staff and led by a trained Chicago Cares volunteer leader. Search by date, location or issue area to find a volunteer opportunity that’s right for you, and volunteer as often as you want.

Days of Service
Chicago Cares’ annual events engage 10,000 volunteers in service to make a positive impact in communities all across Chicago. These include Celebration of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (each January) and Serve-a-thon (each June). Volunteers unite together to touch the lives of Chicagoans in need.
Upcoming Event: Serve-a-thon
WHAT: Serve-a-thon is Chicago’s largest annual day of service and Chicago Cares’ largest fundraiser. More than 6,000 volunteers will come together to complete projects that focus entirely on improving Chicago Public Schools by painting, planting, cleaning, organizing and building. Volunteers make a $30 registration donation and are encouraged to set ambitious personal fundraising goals.
WHY: Research has shown that the physical environment of a school is a stronger indicator of a student’s academic success than family background. The 30,000 students who attend our Serve-a-thon schools deserve a bright, clean, welcoming place to learn.
WHO: Chicago Cares builds a stronger community through volunteerism. We work closely with community leaders and partners to address the needs of Chicago Public Schools, create projects to address those needs, and mobilize volunteer groups to complete those projects.
WHERE: Volunteers will meet at Serve-a-thon Plaza at Soldier Field (south of the field on the Stadium Green). After check-in, volunteers will board school buses and travel to and from projects across the city.
WHEN: Saturday, June 11 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., including a post-event celebration with live music and free food!
HOW: Register solo, join a Chicago Cares team, or register a team of volunteers from your company, book club, church, school or family. Learn more by visiting www.chicagocares.org.
